Europe's energy system is undergoing rapid transformation. The electrification of transport, industry and heating, the integration of renewable energy sources, and the growing importance of digital infrastructure are creating new demands on the way electricity is generated, transmitted and used.
As part of the European Week of Regions and Cities, this event explores how Direct Current (DC) technologies can contribute to a more efficient, flexible and resilient energy system, and what this means for regions, cities and communities across Europe.
DC technologies are already enabling large-scale renewable integration and long-distance electricity transmission. Increasingly, they are also being considered for applications closer to end users, including urban energy systems, industrial facilities, buildings, mobility infrastructure and data centres. Yet their successful deployment depends on more than technology alone. Economic viability, regulatory frameworks, safety considerations, public acceptance and local priorities all play important roles.
Bringing together experts from research, industry, policy and regional stakeholders, the session will provide an accessible introduction to the European DC landscape and create a dialogue on where these technologies can add value, what barriers remain, and how regions and cities can help shape their development.
